This was one of 13 puzzles in our September 2011 Back To School Puzzlethon.
It is totally solvable on its own.
This link will take you to the old Back to School Puzzle Page, if you would like to see the other puzzles that were in this 'thon,

Ah, no comments... Poor Arnott! This was my first solve, Arnott. Went straight to it, figuring it'd be easy. Which is was. But it's always good to have one or two like that so we don't all go rip our hair out during the 'thon. :)
Another one I really enjoyed!!! Thanks Arnott!!
Why won't it take my answer?!! TG me, someone!
This was my second solve. Did the Spanish one first just because I enjoy that puzzle type (and usually find them on the easier side). Letter boxes, that is, not foreign languages. I started from the past puzzles archive, otherwise I probably wouldn't have tried Spanish out first. This puzzle was my quickest solve though, under a minute!
[2] Heh I was wondering. Actually... it might have been cool, in a weird way, if this puzzle lasted the entire 'thon without a comment. But seeing comments here now, it just feels better, I must admit :)
The determinant of the matrix created by the numbers was 256. This was so interesting a number that it took me till I'd completed the other puzzles and come back to realize how wrong I'd been.
