And I'm back to my normal confused state tonight - I think I have the first two stages, but not coming up with anything for stage 3.
Edit: NM, I went down a wrong path at first. This was nicely done - a good red herring with a straightforward solve method.
I'll have to admit my first thought when I started solving this was if the answer was "Freud"

Argh! I had the first and last part of the word in about 3 minutes, which makes an actual word. I couldn't understand why it wouldn't accept it. Left for a while, came back, saw the question mark in the middle, slapped myself on the forehead, and typed in the word. Some days it clicks right away, some days it takes a while.

why cant I figure these things out? Can I tell someone what I did to start to solve it and then give me a boot to solve? I am not liking that my brain doesn't work for the one word wonders :(
