Stuck? I highly suggest you print this one out. Not salt, just a suggestion.

  2. UturnPotatoSmithyP on Feb 01, 2012 07:41 PM

I completed step 1, but I don't understand what I'm supposed to do next...

EDIT: 95th after realizing the "treasure" was right where it was supposed to be.

  3. FileDuckiePatanga on Feb 01, 2012 07:19 PM

Ok....I was just about ready to call it a night....when it hit me.

  4. FileTomatobcgrote on Feb 01, 2012 07:20 PM

Yeah, [1], I'm wondering if they'll line up better if I do...

  5. 100_1703Eggsonjahi on Feb 01, 2012 07:23 PM

Microsoft Paint would work too. Just right-click, copy image, paste.

  6. Untitled-1PumpkinAdamMcD on Feb 01, 2012 09:05 PM

[4] I dunno, being more accurate focusing on accuracy just made me more unsure of what's what.

Edit: ... the (very) small degree of impreciseness ends up not mattering too much in the end. Nice puzzle :-)

That took a little work. Great trio tonight sonjahi!!

  8. FilePotatokvh14 on Feb 01, 2012 07:28 PM

Am I drawing lines to keep letters or eliminate them? Either way doesn't seem to provide anything remotely tangable.

  9. FilePlumlordebon on Feb 01, 2012 08:29 PM

Even using paint, staying within the dots I can include or exclude some letters depending on exactly how I draw it.

I can see an obvious answer in it too, but nothing is clicking for a step 2. Finally figured it out. Makes sense in retrospect, but the puzzle could have been tied together a bit better.

This was definitely challenging for me. I ended up working on it for a bit then moving along to the hyper before coming back, having to open it in a drawing program (no MS Paint for me), and even then took me quite awhile to get the final step. It was a fair puzzle - I just kept running into speedbumps. I'm glad I persevered though!

  11. 100_1703Eggsonjahi on Feb 01, 2012 07:31 PM

The lines indicate inclusion but maybe not the way you think.

  12. BjDuckiedrlaura92 on Feb 01, 2012 07:35 PM

[11] was just what I needed.

  13. FileSailboatdagibbs on Feb 01, 2012 07:37 PM

Um... is Cusoreocmaruetes a word? :)

  14. FileCarrotamaguriken on Feb 01, 2012 07:39 PM

[13] If it IS a word, remind me never to challenge you to a game of Scrabble! :-o

  15. FileSailboatdagibbs on Feb 01, 2012 07:40 PM

    [14] LOL.

  16. FileSailboatcblankes on Feb 01, 2012 07:40 PM

do it have anything to do with "choo-choo"?

  17. FileRocketInsaif on Feb 01, 2012 07:48 PM

Yeah [13], that's what I keep coming up with. I can't see how that would work and none of the other comments are helping me make sense of this one, even after getting the Crypto and Hyper.

P&S strikes me again, and just too late to make top 100. Had to rethink [11] to make it work, but it did.

  18. UntitledPotatoBenditlikebaker on Feb 01, 2012 07:45 PM

wow I dont know if I just have crooked eyes and can't draw lines or what.. I keep trying with no success

  19. 100_1703Eggsonjahi on Feb 01, 2012 07:46 PM

[13][17] ??? I can see from your "word" that you have the right letters in there - even grouped together (although not in the right order). But I have no idea how you got the other 10 letters. The lines tell you what letters to use and you read them left to right, top to bottom.

  20. FileEggplantDeemiklos on Feb 01, 2012 07:48 PM

Well, it's not potato. Stuck on step 2.

  21. 100_1703Eggsonjahi on Feb 01, 2012 07:49 PM

So Arnott didn't care much for how I chose to get the letters here. I thought the first step was simple enough that I wanted to leave the added difficulty in determining what letters you had. My apologies to those for whom that may have made the puzzle unfun.

If [11] doesn't quite help you enough, maybe knowing that the word you get from the lines (which is not the answer, btw) is 6 letters.

  22. FilePumpkinMoneypenny on Feb 01, 2012 07:54 PM

[13] I had the same thing. I bet most of us who weren't getting it had that. Finally got it after [21] though. I don't think it was necessarily unfair, I was just doing the wrong thing altogether.

  23. FilePotatokvh14 on Feb 01, 2012 08:02 PM

sonjahi, are you partial to New England this weekend?

  24. UntitledPotatoBenditlikebaker on Feb 01, 2012 08:05 PM

Haha. I finalllly got it after looking closer at what I was doing. I dig the change up in how to do this kind of puzzle, it added a nice twist from the usual method, but still kind of stuck to the usual method.. Either way. I'm a fan. :)

I think I may have the 6 letter word....but still stumped

  26. FileRadishdecofloorlamp on Feb 01, 2012 08:15 PM

Couldn't figure anything at all until I drew it all out on paper. (This is what I get for being too lazy to go all the way upstairs to connect with the printer.)

  27. FileSailboatdagibbs on Feb 01, 2012 08:26 PM

[19] I'd solved it well before I made that comment, so I wasn't actually looking for salt. (That was one of the early, rejected, stages in my attempt to solve it.)

  28. FileSailboatdagibbs on Feb 01, 2012 08:33 PM

[21] I liked how you got the letters. I just wandered down a wrong path first. (And, wrong paths are par for the course for a OWW.) But, it was harder to do just working on screen, though I guess I could have captured into an image-editor program.

  29. FilePotatomhanna1102 on Feb 01, 2012 09:44 PM

if i only had a brain... excellent puzzle. breezed throught the second and third steps... i think i'm the only one that got stuck on the first step. really. if i was "on the ball" and payed attention to the first 2 puzzles i might not have "missed the point" and been "in the dark" for so long. Nite :)

  30. FilePotatojmsmith2434 on Feb 01, 2012 09:49 PM

I'm not even sure which pictures go together...

  31. FilePlumpaleblueeyes24 on Feb 01, 2012 10:21 PM

    Ahhh.....lightbulb!!!!

  32. FilePlumpaleblueeyes24 on Feb 01, 2012 10:23 PM

[30] Think popular phrases. Hope that's not too much info.

  33. Avatar_profileGrapesdjoshi on Feb 02, 2012 08:20 AM

I know I have the 6 letter word but now what??
edit: nvmnd, doing the hyper helped!

  34. FilePumpkinJohn on Feb 02, 2012 09:31 AM

    Rock the Casbah!

  35. 100_1703Eggsonjahi on Feb 02, 2012 07:19 PM

[33] I'm glad it helped... but for future Surprise Me solvers, you shouldn't actually need to find the companion hypercross to solve this. This puzzle gives you two idioms of a certain form and all the words you matched up were in that form too, so... you get a word. It's not the answer. But it's part of another idiom of the same form and you want the companion word.

[34] :) If I could have clued Casbah... that would have been fun.
