Doing the Hypercross first was a big help... Hope that's not too salty.
Isn't the first word of the first clue missing a blank?
[2] That's what I'm thinking...
[2] Yikes! I don't know how that happened. But it's fixed now.
[2] Yes, the first word should have 6 spaces, followed by 5 spaces.
(And Philana ninja'ed me... man, she's good!)
[1] I got fourth in the Hyper but can't figure this one out a all, and ditto on the missing space in the first clue.
[2] That's what I was thinking... That's totally throwing me off... Hope I'm not wasting time!
I am not quite seeing how that last one fits in with the theme implied by [1] and the Hypercross...
Edit: Well, I guess I needed my hearing checked a little!
So if it's an acrostic, shouldn't there be numbers underneath the blanks?
[9} The wikipedia definition of acrostic helped me
Re-read the instructions....they're quite explicit as to what to use.
[10] i did that, but there are 2, one has numbers and one has a poem.. ?
Edit. [10] was right and once i figured out the hyper theme I had it. [14]-[17] threw me off.
All 3 under 100 yay me!
Hmm...I think "electrocardiography" could have worked too.
If you treat this as an acrostic, you get a word? To paraphrase Jules Winnfield, "This ain't no word I ever heard of!"
Edit: *solves puzzle, declares it a Decepticon, and blasts it with laser cannon*
Thanks [11]! Just the salt I needed.
[14] And to quote my dear old mother, "aint aint a word cause it aint in the dictionary".
[14] correction: This ain't no word you ever saw. It is a word you heard of.
[13] I agree.
That dude's not a dwarf! lol
So either we're supposed to get a word out of the initial sounds or it involves the same thing the hyper does. Neither sounds like a word to me.
[20] Don't just write the answers to the clues down, say them out loud.
[10] Thanks, I wouldn't have gotten it without checking Wikipedia. I still didn't like this one... is this really how this type of acrostic works? Counterintuitive to me.
[21] The whole answers or just the beginning sounds? Still confused as to what an acrostic has to do with it. If it's the poem acrostic, it's just the initial letters or sounds that are pertinent.
[23] I sent you a TG.
[23] Sounds. Very beginning sounds. Ignore the 2nd words on the 2 word clues.
[23] looking back at the hypercross answers was a WHOLE lot of help for me.
97th! This was my first time in first 100, and one of the few OWW I've ever solved! :D
[27] funny how these things hit people differently - usually i can get them with no help, but this one isn't making any sense to me....
edit: finally got it after reading the earlier clues back again -- this one just doesn't do it for me tonight :(
[25] Do we use the first letters and their normal sounds, or the sounds the first letters make in *these* words? Neither way is working for me, but maybe if I keep trying the right way...
I cannot get a word out of this. Google is no help either.
[29] I would guess the way they're said in the words if you go by what [21] said.
You're looking for 1 letter per clue.
I got nothin' :-(
Finally got this with another push from a TG. Did not care for this at all. You don't want to use the beginning sounds per se; what you want to do is translate each beginning sound into a letter. I guess that's where the acrostic comes into the picture.
[29] ignore the letters. Use the first *sounds* in each word.
okay, i don't get the 4th one then... cause the way I was brought up to use acrostics doesn't fit? (had to change the comment here.. cause I worded it the wrong way)
never mind.. i just had to "tweak" it.. cause it doesn't fit what I've considered the actual defintion of an acrostic.
[36] Try this website: http://inogolo.com/pronunciation/
You can search for things, and it has links to play someone pronouncing it. The 5th one is in there.
[36] Say it the way the average American pronounces it.
I think it was the long vowels that were throwing off what I was looking for...
[34] finally did it for me. A bit too obscure for my taste...
Got the 5 terms, understand acrostics, but still nothin'
update: had the wrong term for #4. Tried a sound that made sense & got it.
Finally got it, [21] was very helpful.
Finally got it - thanks [32] I was using too many letters to create the sound.
I got bit by assuming that for a OWW puzzle, I should work it as an acrostic puzzle. No, this is just a generic acrostic (text/poem).
[33] Well... you got a nice Monkey!
[19] You gnome better. haha
I thought an acrostic was as used here. and a used to appear in the Saturday Washington Post:
