Actually, the Pride and Prejudice mini series from the 1990's is one of the best.
And the Lord of the Rings movies, while fabulous, really play loose with the book, especially with Faramir's characterization, and the battle at Helm's Deep. The movie of "The Two Towers" is particularly annoying that way. Still fabulous movies, but...as one who loves those books....
[2] I just finished the first book of the trilogy and I didn't find that it was too far off the mark.
My husband only had to read the last chapter or two before we both picked up with the second book.
LOTR and Harry Potter are great. I'm very interested to see how "The Lightning Thief" fares. GREAT books for all of you greek mythology lovers that are willing to read young adult books!
I'm with [10] - The Pride and Prejudice mini-series was well done. I liked both the mini-series and the later movie. The movie did take several liberties, but personally I enjoyed the adaptation.

I'm gonna have to say a tie between Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Both are excellent, with painstaking attention to detail.

Jane Eyre (PBS) or Oliver Twist (PBS)
British adoptions always stay true to the story.
