Burton Holmes (1870-1958) was an intrepid American explorer, crisscrossing the globe photographing and filming foreign cultures, and coining the term “travelogue.” He lectured widely, catering to the armchair traveler, and eventually Hollywood came knocking. In this travel short, Holmes spotlights the Ainu, indigenous people of Japan and Russia. The men were characterized by heavy beards, hence the term “Hairy Ainu.” The population of the Ainu has been substantially diluted over the decades, and there is not an accurate count of those still in existence. was reproduced on Premium Heavy Stock Paper which captures all of the vivid colors and details of the original.
