At 18, Clare, the daughter of a count, heard St. Francis preach and immediately renounced all her possessions and became a nun. She later founded the Poor Clares, an extremely strict order: the nuns wore no shoes, slept on the floor and never ate meat. Her association with childbirth is shown by the prevalence of hospitals named after her that specialize in maternity care. This lead free pewter medal of St. Clare was handmade by artist Hank Schlau. Clare is shown in profile on the front, and the back features a monstrance, one of the symbols of Clare. The medal measures 1 inch tall, 7/8 of an inch wide. It can be used as a pendant for a leather cord necklace, or as a key chain. The bail will fit a pendant up to 3mm in diameter. It comes with a split ring for using as a key chain and a card explaining the meaning of the medal.
