More Info

In Mexico, Dia de Muertos includes many festivals and lively celebrations. The dead are not remembered or commemorated. Instead they are considered present. This is a celebration with the dead, not of the dead. The custom goes back to indigenous Aztec ritual mixed with Catholicism. In Hong Kong, the ‘Hungry Ghost Festival’ in July is the time during which restless spirits roam the earth. To appease these ghosts, many Chinese people ‘feed’ their own ancestors. In neighborhoods across Hong Kong, you’ll see many people occupying parks, piazzas, pitches and other spaces to offer sacrifices to their ancestors and other wandering ghosts. These sacrifices can be things like: burning incense, distributing free rice, and performing live Chinese operas for ghosts that may need some entertainment. In Korea, Chuseok (“Autumn Eve”) is celebrated as the biggest and most important holidays in the country. Family memebers from near and far get together and share food and stories to give thanks to their ancestors.
