Wife got iPhone 8. Bought this to compliment the new phone. It works well. You don't need the pillow to make it work. The pillow doesn't really work well protecting the phone from sliding around when bumped. You have to position the phone properly on the pad / pillow. If not well positioned, the phone will constantly switch from charging to not charging state.

Mat worked fine without the pillow, but would not work with the pillow in place, this really doesn't bother me, I have bought others that haven't worked at all.
