Seeking a tranquil place to simultaneously indulge his twin passions of painting and gardening, master impressionist Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926) moved to the small Normandy village of Giverny in 1883. Finding a house on a verdant plot of land, he began transforming its grounds into a painter’s paradise, planting extensive gardens of infinitely variable color and form. The project occupied the rest of his life and resulted in some of his most famous paintings. After Monet’s death, the gardens were neglected until the 1980s, when an effort aided by photographer and horticultural designer Elizabeth Murray restored their former grandeur. Murray returns to the gardens regularly to photograph the ever-changing beauty that so inspired Monet. Pomegranate also publishes Elizabeth Murray’s book Monet’s Passion: Ideas, Inspiration, and Insights from the Painter’s Gardens (revised edition, 2010).
