Special Characters in Base Text of Posts

By trial and error (and because I am ignorant in these things) I have found that some special characters can be used to format text in this forum. So here I am trying to see what does what… (specifically looking for a </t>tab)

on each line I name the character, then surround the name of the character with the character, and then the word “test” tilde tilde test accent `accent` test exclamation test at sign at sign test pound sign #pound sign# test dollar $dollar$ test percent percent test carat carat test ampersand &ampersand& test asterisk asterisk test open paren (open paren( test close paren )close paren) test open-close paren (open-close paren) test minus minus test underline underline test plus plus test equals =equals= test less than <less>< test greater than >greater than> test less greater than <less> test between curly brackets {between curly brackets} test between square brackets [between square brackets] test single quote ‘single quote’ test double quote “double quote” test colon :colon: test semicolon ;semicolon; test __________________________________________ Can anyone point me to a useful site for more information?
