Random Questions: Suggestion

Random Questions: Suggestion

I enjoy the random questions here. I like answering them, and I like making them up. However, I think it is possible to improve significantly upon the existing system.

For one thing, the lifespan of these questions has a staggering amount of variation. Some questions are up for a matter of hours, while others are up for a minute or less. Also, a some of the questions are just awful, or get repeated over and over and over. Questions that are of the form “pick a number between purple and elephant” or “‘?’ with answers ‘?’, ‘.’, and ‘?!’” are not even a little bit fun to answer.

This is my thought: Every day, when the puzzles for the day are posted, choose 12 GOOD that haven’t been done a dozen times and make them “random questions for the day.” All twelve of these questions can be viewed and answered just like a One Word Wonder or Cryptopix. Feature each of the 12 questions for 2 hours apiece on the part of the front page where the random questions are currently located. That way, the people who are really into the questions can answer them all at once if they choose, while the casual answer can view them at their own pace. That way, we don’t have to worry about “questions having a 100 answer” life. Each question will be on the front page for 2 hours, while all 12 will be available for an entire day.

Like is said in the previous paragraph, it would be nice if these questions were chosen, rather than spun back out by the computer. This would ensure fun and interesting questions. Instead of giving 5 Tanga points to every single feeble question attempt, give 15-20 points for every question that is chosen as one of the 12 for the day. It’s not nearly as difficult as making a OOW or Cryptopix, but there will at least be some level of selectivity involved, so the point reward should be increased. Keep the points awarded at 1 per random question answered. 12 answers = 12 points, while a correct answer on a OOW is (generally) 10 points, so this seems fair to me.

In summation:
1. Choose 12 questions a day and make them all available for the day.
2. Feature 1 of these on the front page for 2 hours at a time.
3. Actually SELECT questions based on their merit/fun/uniqueness.
4. Give no points to unselected questions; give 15-20 for selected questions.
5. Continue to give 1 point for random question answers.

I know I’m new here, but I really think that this system could work. Please, let me know what you think and offer further suggestions.
