How hard should a Tanga puzzle be?

How hard should a Tanga puzzle be?

I guess it’s my fault, but I’m a little taken aback at how unkind some people get when they find a puzzle too hard. I spent all morning putting together a Hypercross puzzle and was surprised to find it posted that very night. I was also surprised to find out how difficult it was for solvers. This was my first puzzle and I learned a valuable lesson. I certainly didn’t set out to make a puzzle that was “painful” or “awful.” I had assumed a puzzle editor would have sent it back for revision if it wasn’t suitable for the site.

It seems to me that the Tanga puzzles have gotten easier and that it has become a race to solve them within the first few minutes. Those are the puzzles people like. But I like when users help each other with “salt” (or “fountain-mountain-hairy guy,” as it is now called) and the puzzle-solving becomes something of a team activity. That doesn’t happen when a puzzle is too easy.

So, if I ever make another puzzle again (and you probably don’t want me to), I need to ask some questions: How difficult should it be? How long should it take the average solver to figure it out? Should every user be able to solve every puzzle be himself or herself? Should “salt” be necessary, or is that a sign of a bad puzzle?

Lastly, please remember that Tanga users like me are making these puzzles for the enjoyment of all and without compensation (except points of unknown value). Obviously, most of us are not professional puzzle makers. But this site can only keep going if users make them. A little encouragement wouldn’t hurt.
