What makes salt salty and what makes it taste bad?

What makes salt salty and what makes it taste bad?

I would like to start up a discussion on what constitutes “good” salt and what constitues “bad” salt.

In my opinion,

Good salt nudges you toward the SOLVE METHOD, not the ANSWER WORD.

I think that many of us (myself included) forget that.

Last night’s OWW is an excellent example. I spoke to several fellow solvers as we struggled with the hints given in trying to solve the puzzle. For every single one of us, the salt had led us further astray and led to increasing frustration.

This is because the early salt all hinted toward the ANSWER WORD. Best case, such salt merely makes no sense until you have solved it and then you smile and say “now I get it”. Worst case, it leads you down rabbit trails, sometimes from which there is no return.

Take, for example, “You have what is RIGHT, now what is LEFT?” This comment was posted and then zapped – so it MUST have been important, right? So heavy with salt that it had to be deleted! What is LEFT? Ok! I must need to look at the words that ARE NOT correct. An approach, of course, that will lead you nowhere.

Then many other comments followed concerning LEFT and RIGHT. Comments are being zapped… well, they are being zapped left and right! lol Then bcgrote mentions Jefferson and Da Vinci and gst hails the comment as WAY TOO SALTY! So, I’m now thinking that the SOLVE METHOD (not the ANSWER WORD) has to do with LEFT and RIGHT!

Oh, and look! The puzzle says “handy skill” – more fodder regarding your left and right hands – the salt is on target!

Maybe I use the letters for the wrong(LEFT) words that are typed with the LEFT hand and the ones for the correct(RIGHT) words that are typed with the RIGHT hand. Again, a bad approach.

By the time I finally solve it, I hate twj and all his/her ancestors and descendents and everything that they hold dear (that’s hyperbole, for those that don’t recongize it). But after I step back and cool off, I realize that the puzzle was really not that bad at all; actually, it was a nicely done puzzle. Easy to recognize the phonetic alphabet and recognize that some are not right. Easy enough to separate them. The last step, of how to “read” them, should have provided just enough obstruction that you have to stop and look at what you have. I was at that last step with 16 solvers on the puzzle. And I stayed there for 82 more solvers while I tried to make sense of the salt.

I will fully admit that I completely whiffed the last step. That was all mine. But when I turned to the community for help, the help was actually ANTI-helpful.

So, I guess all of this was a colorful illustration of why I think the number one consideration for giving salt is to provide a clue on SOLVING THE PUZZLE, not guessing the word.

What do you think is important in giving salt?
