I somehow made it more than two decades of my life never using a meat thermometer. No idea why, but moving into a new apartment with an unfamiliar oven I figured I'd better buy one (I bought it in a bundle with a digital scale). I think I assumed they'd be more work than they are - but this one's easy! I've used it exclusively for baking raw chicken from frozen. Literally you just stick it in and then it tells you what the temperature is. Easy peasy.No trouble to wash but I just use soapy water on the end that touched food only; I can't imagine you'd want to get the digital read part wet.
