It's like an erector set and a netbook had a baby. Awesome.

I purchased one of these in the first wave hoping for a Christmas delivery, and the Piper crew got it done. They were very responsive to email requests for tracking and updates and had a great attitude. They were also very forthcoming about supply chain delays in their first shipment and what would be a realistic expectation, and went so far as to send me a blueprint to give him should it fail to arrive on time. But it arrived with days to spare. My six-year-old son loved putting it together. It is absolutely hands-on; kids without any experience with tool use might need some direction, but for a kid with some light electronics experience it was a blast. The kit came with a good set of instructions that made a great poster for his wall, in cartoon style blueprint, and all of the tools and parts necessary for assembly. The box is well-constructed and everything fit together pretty snug. The only exception being the plastic housing for the pi. It tends to fall out of its slot and may require just a bit of hot glue or caulk where it joins the wood base. It took the better part of a morning for him to get it powered on, and he was playing through the story line by lunch. The game does a good job of introducing breadboard circuitry in a logical, fun, problem-solving way. The challenges start easy, but get progressively more difficult and reliant on the wiring. After completing the final challenge he discovered how to boot to the Pi OS without the Piper app, and has been alternating between Python games and the Minecraft creative software. To fully utilize its potential as a mini-pc required a keyboard, but thanks to the extra available USB ports, the little dongle that came with the Logitech K400 wireless keyboard is not the least bit noticeable. It worked with no drivers or setup necessary.
