It's effective in that it shows you "everything" pee stains, other stains, spots where cleaning solutions where used everything... Some show up blue everything else is neon green. Not sure what is pee or other stains. Was looking for cat pee btw.

EDIT: IF YOU STOP SEEING STAINS, make sure the batteries are fresh. The light coming out should be purple. I thought my cats had started behaving but it turned out my batteries were just low. :( Other reviewers are correct, the worst part about this light is the knowledge you have to live with once you own it. We bought a house that had previously been home to a nervous little dog, then moved our 3 cats in. Later, my partner's parents also moved in, and brought two more cats with them. All of these cats used to live together, but haven't seen each other in years, so there's nervousness. Long story short, one of them sprayed my chair and I wanted to be SURE I had gotten it all, so I bought this. It showed old stains, new stains, half-cleaned stains, secret stains. It works on dog AND cat pee, because I had had the carpet steam-cleaned weeks prior to this and could see where they were half-removed from the carpet, and where they were new. Bathroom moisture streaks host bacteria, and that'll glow, too. Vomit glows. All of those things show up looking like green glow-in-the-dark paint. No special lenses needed, and everyone in our house could see them, even people wearing blue-light-blocker lenses. (They only glow when dry, btw, and some materials naturally absorb more light than others, so sniff if unsure.) Rocco and Roxie enzyme cleaner erases the phosphorus from the stains, btw, and Nature's Miracle does not. The ammonia/urea will be gone in either case, but I like the former, since that stain won't just be there forever to confuse you under a black light.

A must have if you have pets.

Wish I knew to use this sooner! I keep it in my travel suitcase. First thing I do when I arrive at the hotel, in the dark, is use it on the flat and fitted sheets and pillow cases, towels, and all around the room and bathroom. On several occasions I have found stains on linens that only the blue light picks up and have had to call the front desk for new linens.
