I have very thick bone straight hair so it is nearly impossible to do anything with it when it comes to styling. This product definitely lived up to what I expected from it, it holds my hair in place, quick and easy to use, good price, and lasts a while.

When it comes to styling my hair, I've had a painful time finding the kind of product that actually works well for me. I've switched out pomades, waxes, and creams very frequently over the years. The last product I stuck with (and have been using, up until I found this) is actually a pomade from Brazil! My wife is Brazilian so we pick up a big bag of them every time we travel over (can't get it here).Fortunately I won't have to continue making those 10 hour flights to get some hair styling gear. I stumbled across this "Slick Gorilla" and decided to give it a shot. I'm glad I did! It works just as well as what I had before, however, I use MUCH less of this.My other product I was scooping out enough to thinly cover the tips of three fingers. With this, that would be unbelievably overkill. I used something like a quarter of a penny's worth of this and was still too much! Couldn't believe it. Next time I'll use less and work towards finding just the right amount.To understand what that means, my hair is fairly short (maybe 3 inches at the longest in the front, tight sides and back). I blow dry my hair before I start styling, so it was nearly completely dry at this point. As I then worked this into my hair, it immediately provided a sheen that was pretty shiny. The product says it is matte, more on that shortly.It had a little bit of a greasy yet thick feel as I worked it in, and I could see it was giving some structure and thickness to my hair. What started as a little chunk on my finger tip was now covering my whole head of hair, top to bottom - impressive. It was difficult to wash off my hands (not the worst, definitely took time) but it says it washes out of hair easily. Will see about that tonight, but most pomades don't exactly wash out with ease anyway.Now I was ready to style. Note that I end up using a brush to style my hair, but if you were going for a more messy/natural look manipulated by finger, this would serve the purpose well. It gives you enough structure to leave your hair where you want without it becoming a sticky mess. Same with the brush; I was able to quickly style as I wanted, and it wasn't setting back down to where it naturally rests (huge problem for me; thick, heavy hair - constantly trying to prop it up). I was really happy to see how quickly I could style with this and maintain the look.I end up using a bit of hairspray to finish at the end, but usually I need much more. With this, a few sprays did the trick, and that shiny look I mentioned earlier is mostly gone. Had started with more of a "wet" look but certainly does not keep that up within a few minutes of application. It is much more matte after it sets for a bit, and it leaves you with a natural look - not like you ran wax through your hair or layered on a jar of product. The pic I attached may look "shiny" but that's more the light reflecting off my black hair. No hairspray was used for the pic; the front is held up strictly with Slick Gorilla (which is a pretty slick name, I like it).A few hours later and my hair still looks the same. Best of all it is soft to touch (thanks to minimal hairspray), and I was able to run a brush through the front to do some rearranging (something I couldn't do before with a ton of hairspray) - no issues there, continued to maintain a hold, and no residue from moving it around.Now the price of this isn't cheap, and I think that's OK - even though it is a fairly small container of product, like I mentioned before you need barely any of this to work into your hair (can't emphasize that enough). It really is incredible how far this goes. In the end I could see this lasting me a few months with ease.Last comment, the scent. It has what I'd describe that classic "clay" smell: nothing like perfume or being purposely scented. And it is barely there; my wife couldn't detect it without being an inch away from my hair. So if scents bother you, this one won't. If you wanted something to put off an perfume/cologne like smell to those around you, you won't find that here.

I got this product for my husband to try. He has what I have heard him describe to his barber as a "trim on the top with a hard part and fade." Basically he has several inch long hair on the top and the sides are essentially shaved, progressively getting longer the closer it gets to the top of his head. He uses product to brush over the hair aware from his part. He is a self proclaimed styling product snob, and has tried everything from drugstore to salon quality products. His main comment with this product? "Wow, this stuff is the bomb!"Pros:1. It is very low shine. Like essentially nonexistent shine, which he values a ton.2. It held his hair in place over a 12 hours shift with several rounds of CPR (he's a nurse, don't worry).3. The consistency is very thick, but easy to warm between fingers and apply through the hair. He said that it seemed to coat the strands easier without leaving big globs.4. The jar is large enough that it will last him quite some time.Cons:1. Only that he likes it so much that I think we'll be stuck buying this stuff forever! lolAfter years of trial and error, I think that we finally found the winner! From a wife's perspective, his hair does look great when he uses it. Not that he'd ever admit it, but I think using this product makes him feel good and gives him a nice little confidence boost. Should our opinions change, we'll update this review.

Slick Gorilla Clay Pomade 2.5ozOverall I'm happy with this Pomade. It's definitely different from the Old Spice putty I'm used to using. It really has a drier clay feeling when you dig a bit out. I was a little worried it would be too dry, warming it up in your hands though it melts fairly easily but it does have a clay feeling once warmed up.It's a bit difficult to spread through hair. I noticed it kind of clumps sections of hair together so expect a bit more time working it through your hair. I wouldn't say this is a negative, it's doing what it's supposed to. I'm just used to a more pliable putty. Also I applied this to dry hair, not slightly moist which I expect would help a bit.As for the smell... To me it definitely has a slight clay almost play-doh smell. Though you won't smell like a kindergartener so don't worry. It's not strong at all, only a slight hint.

Overall I do enjoy the pomade with a firm hold, low shine, matte finish texture. The pomade that I usually buy from the store cant really keep up my hair and I would need to apply a lot for it to stay but for this slick gorilla clay pomade I just need to apply a dab and it keeps my hair up nice. To me, the pomade smells like oatmeal which can be a good and bad thing depending on whether you like oatmeal or not.My issue is not with the pomade but at the price it's at. For 17.48 this is a fairly expensive pomade (6.99$ / ounce). At this price point I would've expected the container to be glass or of a higher quality material compared to the plastic that they used for the whole container.

Works well. Keeps my hair looking good all day.My daughter likes it too.Good for straight or curly hair.Does add a shine, and you will need to wash your hair at the end of the day.
