The magenets seem to hang on during play. The design doesn't have a place for them to be when they're removed from play. It's very compact, less than the thickness of a checkbook. The hinge has snapped a couple times, but we could put it back with a little finesse. We did lose a piece in the car, and after trying everything we emailed the company. They spoke like they were offering to replace a piece. If they did not though, it's pretty easy to make a proxy for the piece lost with magnet material.

Basically a good chess set

It's really a decent board, the magnets are nice and strong, no chance of a piece moving accidentally. One problem that maybe nobody thought of: where do you put a piece when it's captured? There could be a little magnetic area on each player's side, but there isn't. Our recommendation: stack the captured piece under one of your other pieces. This can work for a little while but in the end game you're gonna have some really tall pieces. Also if a pawn gets promoted, finding the queen might be a headache. Maybe always keep a captured queen right under your king as a cheat. Only other complaints (1) the instructions are totally inadequate for actually learning the rules of chess and (2) obviously it's made in China. So other than these few gripes it's actually a nice product and I would buy it again. I wish they had a little extra magnetic space for captured pieces. That would be a lot smarter.
