I thought this was going to be so cute, but it's actually awful.It's not a "latch hook" craft at all. It does include a hook, but it's a small crochet hook, not a latch hook. The yarn is also not cut into small pieces, and you aren't asked to do so.There's no color guide printed or indicated on the penguin's body. There are a lot of the small holes, so using the printed guide on the instructions and counting the holes is tedious, frustrating, and nearly impossible.You are supposed to pull the yard through the square holes and form loops. There is nothing to hold the loops in place, and they are all connected! One wrong move, and some or all of the loops you have already made will be gone with a domino effect. You have to judge/decide for yourself how long to make the loops -- a very subjective thing to entrust to a kid. You or the kid will probably want the figure to be identifiable at the finish, and loop length will affect that, too. You're also working on a 3D form, making the loops close-up, one-by-one. So getting the loops even is not easy, even for an adult. And, since they are actually big strings of connected loops, you cannot even trim them like you would with a traditional latch hook craft. Also, you need to make sure you don't make the loops too big because you could potentially run out of yarn!The yarn is not a good quality/type for this project, and it is too thick for the included hook. It gets pierced easily, and just falls apart when that happens. It's also difficult to pull the thick yarn through the tiny, inflexible holes.If you put the plastic "practice" heart inside the penguin, there's a chance it will catch on the yarn, and destroy your work. Even if something pulls on one of the loops from the outside, your loops can be destroyed.Overall, this is not the fun kit I expected. Even though the body form is decent quality, and the completed project should be cute, getting to that point takes a lot of work and I predict there will be more tears and anger than smiles and laughter by kids trying to make this penguin.

This items description states that this is a latch kit for children, when it really isn't. It is a kit that wants you to make a series of loops around plastic using a crochet hook... and in the most difficult way possible. My 9 year old had a heck of a time trying to figure it out and to be honest, so did I. The materials provided are good quality and worked well. However the directions were hard to follow and in the end... we couldn't finish it. I honestly wouldn't seek this out again and wouldn't pay this much for it either.

The product was delivered damaged and open. Really disappointed in how it arrived we'll have to see if all the pieces are here when we put it together....

This is a terribly designed product for kids. As an adult I’m frustrated with it. The form is not color coded and you need to practically guess where to put the different colors. Some of the holes are so tiny the hook barely gets through, let alone yarn with it. The yarn strands easily comes apart as your hook it through. As someone else said it’s easy for a bunch of your work to get unraveled as there is a domino effect when one loop gets pulled.

My 9yo daughter received this from a friend as a birthday gift. She loves arts & crafts and is pretty good at them. When she asked me to help her with this one, I just thought maybe she was having a little trouble understanding the instructions. After looking at it myself, I realized that not only were the instructions not very clear, but the project itself was nearly impossible... and I'm 40 years old! I let my husband try it, and although he was able to get it started, he quickly became frustrated and agreed that it was not a good craft for children (or anyone, really). Sadly, we had to pass on completing this project, and I promised my daughter I would find a similar, less complicated item with which to replace this.

I bought as a present for granddaughter. Very frustrating for both of us trying to do it.

This product is rated as suitable for kids 8+. I gave it to my 8 yr old granddaughter and she could not do it so I tried to teach her but I was also not able to get the loops to stay in. I do not recommend this for kids of any age.

It is in no way for beginners. The hook won't grab the yarn, the yarn pulls apart because it is very poor quality and the instructions are not geared towards beginners. This is a complete waste of money for any child or any beginning adult. My daughter was so disappointed on Christmas.

It says it’s so easy but it’s not even a latch hook some of he mesh squares are so tiny you can’t use those squares and the string to big not for kids my son was so disappointed
