Surprisingly Good Software, Really Great Controller Ergonomics, But No USB-C Charger?!

Warning: Depending on where you are buying this product, the only constant of the phones that are supported are the Razer Phone 2. Other phones supported are dependent on the region. This reviews the US product which is compatible with the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and the Samsung Galaxy S10+) Unlike past controllers that Razer has brought out, this Junglecat is seriously tested well in terms of software. While this controller uses the HID-compliant button mapping that works with Google Play well, you can and should install the Razer software. Surprisingly (and Razer fans know this too), the software does actually work out of the box and can be used with Android versions at 7 or above. With the supported US phones, you really should be over this. Physically, this "controller" is really two halves of one that are independently functioning and powering. I will refer to the left one as the Select half and the right as the Start half to distinguish them. On the Select half, there is an analog joystick and a D-pad. On the right, there is another analog joystick and four buttons. Both sides have two trigger buttons. Using these for the last couple of days, I find that the Select half goes out faster than the Start half due to using it more, so charging tends to be on the unbalanced side. They charge independently with USB-C, however, there is no USB-C charger included. This is not good for the premium placement of the product in the first place, but also, the nature of the half's mean that you would need two USB-C cords for each. For compatible phones, there are included cases that you put the phone in, then the controller half slides in on each side of the case for a firm fit. I did not have any problems fitting the case to my S10+, and the controller half comes in close enough but not such that I would accidentally touch the screen when using the controller. They do not slip off even if you invert the phone for whatever reason as they do lock in. For incompatible phones, you can still use this controller with the factory midsection as a plain Bluetooth controller, but no guarantees on compatibility for Razer's software. Overall, this is a good controller, but I do not know why a USB-C charger was not included as this seems to be unkind considering the premium placement of this product. In use though, you should get a very ergonomic and comfortable gaming experience without software hassles.

Specialized device and brand name = overpriced

This is an okay mobile game controller, though frankly, I have used $20 phone controllers that worked just as well. The battery life here is a big plus. It claims to last 100 hours, and I know I don't have anywhere near that many hours and the battery is still going strong. I'm a casual Fortnite fan, and this controller works fine, if not very loud. The clicks are something else. The software is just okay. The biggest issue I have is that this thing originally retailed for $120, and that's a lot, considering you can buy much cheaper devices that do the same thing.

case is a joke. Controller is great otherwise. Needs two separate chargers for each half

It does work with my phone and the case fits, but no way I leave my expensive phone is a cheap plastic case like that and I am not going to switch the cases all the time. It offers no protection. I wish they made some kind of a clamp or something to fit it over the existing cases. Other than that, it works very well. Works really good with Fortnite and other games. I downloaded the app, and it found all the games it is compatible with, and let me adjust the controls for each of the games separately. I needed to update firmware before it let me do all that, though. It paired with my phone easily. I was disappointed that I needed to come up with two USB-C chargers to charge it, although it does not take that much time, and you can do it one by one if necessary. Without the case, it is quite strange to play with phone in the stand and the controller in hands

Got Me Banned: Be Careful

So I'll start out by saying that I love this, but also hate it. Why do I love it? It reminds me of the Switch. Your phone goes into the case (which is no good, which I'll get into later), which acts as the docking for the controllers. They slide in and click on the top and bottoms of the cell phone. It's got that satisfying click too. Once you download the apps, you'll see that most of the games that seem good for this cost money. That was kind of a bummer, because I don't play cell games often enough to justify paying for a mobile game. I ended up looking for some free ones, and they were okay. The worst was when I loaded up Call of Duty Mobile. It got me banned!! The first time, I thought it was a mistake. It was a 1 hour ish ban, so I didn't think too much of it. I thought it was due to me joining and leaving a couple of games. The reason for that was because I had to adjust/setup the keys. For games that aren't natively supported, there is an overlay app/function where you can set up the keys to work where your fingers would normally be used. Well it turns out that is what got me banned. After an hour, I went back and promptly got banned for 2 weeks after a single match. While it worked, it was amazing. I was going through people like butter, and playing like I usually do. The buttons are responsive and everything about it worked really good. My only fear is trying out other games and getting banned from those as well. Can I get my entire account banned at some point? What kind of recompense would Razer offer if banned? I just can't afford that risk, and I won't let my kids have that risk as well. I don't get it either. This is Razer!! How are they NOT coordinating with these companies to ensure a $100 product isn't bannable? It's crazy. Just put me in the lobby with the bluetooth controller users. I can't imagine they are banning people using bluetooth controllers. So onto the case. Why was it so terrible? It's slick! It literally falls out of my pockets!!! I've NEVER had a phone fall out of my pocket so casually and so often. I'll be doing nothing, go to cross my legs, and it just slides out. I've never had a cellphone do that before. Are you kidding me? It isn't just once either. It's been at least a dozen times! I'm at the gym and set this on the slightly inclined shelf? Slides off. Ridiculous. I can't get rid of this thing fast enough. SOOOOO much potential though. I really really wanted to love this. Add some silicone or something to the case to add some friction, and this would be much better. I swear at least one drop a day is a result of the slick case. I hate it. Outside of that, I shouldn't have to worry about getting banned by using a Razer peripheral. Sad.

Some games will ban u for using these controllers

WARNING: THESE CONTROLLERS DONT WORK WITH COD MOBILE!! You get banned during the first match!! I'm not sure what other games do this but I thought I would let people know since it happened to me. Bought these on Razer website. I really do love them but the Bluetooth connectivity does get in the way. Some games would walk off somewhere when I'm trying to move. The overlay is really good and super easy to use. Of a game is already compatible then you're good. The problem is there are more incomparable games than there are compatible ones. Just be careful when using these controllers. Some games don't allow overlay.

Not bad for a good start. The case needs MAJOR improvement.

I bought this controller directly from Razer. I have played about 40 hours of gaming on the controller with the phone in the case. The controller is really nice the functionality is pretty good. The buttons have a really good feel to them and yes there is a click but it's a good click it's not a very loud click. The Bluetooth connection is really good the controller battery lasts a very long time. Your phone will probably have to be recharged at least a dozen times and the controller will still be good enough to play games before it needs charging. My issue is with the case itself; when I leave my phone in the case with the controllers off it doesn't offer the necessary protection of a normal case. I have already clumsely dropped it twice; once on asphalt and once on a tile floor. Both times the phone pops out of the case. Because of this I've already dinged my Razer on all 4 corners. I am now fishing around on the internet for a Razer phone 2 junglecat case which I will probably not find until a third-party makes one. Also after about 40 hours of game play, the controllers doesn't feel as secure while attached to the case, a little bit of wiggle. I recommend that if Razer does a Junglecat 2, that the rails are made of sturdier stuff, maybe metal so that it connects with the metal of the connections of the controller to give a better more secure fit. To tell you the truth the current case looks like it could be easily recreated out of sturdier stuff with a 3D graphics printer. Hmmmm? Overall still worth getting, hopefully Razer is thinking tactfully - selling an improved version of this controller along with a possible Razer 3 would be magically.

Limited compatibility, loose fit, high price

Be sure to watch my full video review in the video section above the reviews! If you find yourself wishing you could have the feel of a Nintendo Switch while tapping the more powerful processor in a smartphone this is something to possibly consider. But like with many Razer products sometimes the photos look a little better than the actual experience will be. My chief complaint here is an overall lack of compatibility. While the controller itself will work with just about anything that works with bluetooth controllers, to use it as pictured you're limited to only three premium smartphones: The Razer Phone 2, Samsung Note 9, or the Galaxy S10+. The kit also comes with a small mounting block that allows use of the controller detached from the phone. It's really cramped and tiny. The controller comes with three mounting cases that support the compatible phones. You'll need to remove any phone cases you have connected first before attaching the mount. I was really disappointed to see that the controllers flop around after snapping in. For all the trouble of attaching a specific mounting case the fit should be better! Also be sure the phone is fully charged as the controllers block the phone's charging port. Gameplay isn't bad although you'll have to be a fan of Razer's very short travel directional pad. The thumbsticks feel and control almost identically to the Nintendo Switch joycons - a very familiar experience. I don't like the placement of the buttons below the right thumbstick. We tested the controller with a few "supported" apps like Fortnite in addition to some unsupported emulators. Everything worked as expected. Battery life should be decent on these given they use low energy bluetooth. I did not have to charge them at all since I took them out of the box. But Razer decided not to include any USB-C charging cables! All together I think this is a good idea that's not entirely executed well. The limited compatibility, loose fit, and high price make this a tough one to recommend.

Better products out there.

I was not impressed and the lack of support for Pixel phone cases in particular is a no from me. On the bright side: this is the perfect switch emulator hardware, if you’re into that.
