Are you like me and have chosen not to have children, and yet you feel like you've missed out on the opportunity to raise a surly teenager who will only listen to half of what you say and sometimes only do half of what you ask? Then an Amazon Echo might be right for you.I own 3 Echo devices throughout my home: main floor, second floor, and basement. I use them to control all of the lights in my home, play music for my dogs when I'm not home, and for random questions (such as asking about the current weather). The devices also alert me when a delivery has been made to the house. For the most part, the devices work well. But let's get to that surly teenager part...Since owning Echo devices, I've never had to repeat myself more in my entire life (and I own dogs). An all-too-frequent interaction with an Echo goes as follows:Me (literally no more than 2 feet from the device): "Alexa, turn on the dining room."Echo: ...Me (louder): "Alexa, turn on the dining room."Echo: "Ok." (but no lights come on)Me (louder): "ALEXA! Turn on the dining room!"Echo: "Ok." (Lights finally turn on)And yet if someone on the television merely whispers the name "Alexa," the device immediately springs into action. Finally, I really wish Amazon would implement some kind of "last state memory" function for the Echo system in the event of power outages. One of the most frustrating thing about smart lights is that if the power goes out, when it comes back on, every smart light in your house will default to the "on" state. This is a smart light problem rather than an Echo problem, but I feel like it's a problem Echo could easily solve.Amazon already has the Echo system remember personal preferences for you in your account. It seems to me that it wouldn't be incredibly difficult to program it to recognize when every device associated with your account simultaneously loses power and then remembers to restore the last known lighting settings when the devices come back online. In the end, I do think the Echo system is worthwhile, despite it often acting like a teenager. It helps me be more mindful of keeping lights off in areas of the house I'm not in and if you really want, you can even play some fun tricks on your friends (like create a "Red Alert" routine that will turn every light red and sound an alarm).
