Its all about expectations!

This thing works very nice, but if your expectation is to never run your regular vacuum again, that isn't gonna happen. It does vacuum well. I have a long haired cat that sheds like crazy in the spring and fall. This thing had no issues with getting the hair up and keeping the carpets and floors clean. It saves me from having to vacuum on a daily basis during these times. The unit is definitely a little clumsy on its first couple of trips, not to mention it had trouble finding its way back to the charger at first. But after about 4-5 full trips vacuuming, learning the layout and its way back home, I can say I am extremely happy with the job it does. The vacuuming pattern is very nice. I was actually very surprised how well it does do. After all, it is just a robot vacuum. The real weakness of this unit is the App itself. Its not a good app by any means. Just like a lot of people have mentioned, the smart mapping doesn't work or crashes the app every time you try and use it. Without the smart mapping ability you are kinda stuck vacuuming everywhere unless you buy or place some type of blockers in the doorways of the rooms you want to keep it out of. I ended up placing a 2" high board across the door thresholds of the rooms I want to keep it out of or just keep the door closed altogether. The app is pretty much only good for launching the vacuum and letting you know if there is an issue like its stuck or bag is full. For what it is and what it does it could really be a 5 star vacuum, but unfortunately the app is holding it back. But for now I will just use it as it is because it is nice to come home to a vacuumed house every night.

Cleans well, sometimes gets stuck.

It does clean well. But it also does get stuck fairly often.

Very good vacuum but software a bit glitchy

This is my 4th robot vacuum and the best so far. It's also the first I've had with an excellent mapping feature. It means I don't have to use those wall barriers. It is noisier than my other ones, but that's because the suction is better. I'm amazed at how much stuff it picks up ... you'd think I had kids running around. The software is a bit glitchy, but that may just be the Android version. I had issues when I had to do another map. For some reason, it didn't immediately register. I called support, and the gentleman was very responsive. And I periodically have to reset the Roomba by holding down the Clean button.

a nice surprise

I say a nice surprise because I am surprised that it actually cleans pretty well. It can get under the cupboards too. I think it does a very good job of cleaning. The only downsides I have about it is a couple times I had to start the job all over again, as it needed a bin clean but I couldn't figure out how to get it started again once that was done, because it didn't acknowledge that it had a bin clean. And once when it was charging, it suddenly said it needed a bin clean so I did that, and didn't seem to get it on the charger or something, and it kept giving me an error. So it did not continue after it charged. i had to start it with a "new job". And the wall that I have the charger plugged in to, I noticed that the robot will not vacuum on either side of the charger. I am impressed though with how it knows it's at the edge of stairs, and it does go over throw rugs and from carpet to bare floor very well. I have not had to help it at all. I would recommend this product if you are like me, just using it as an in between vacuum, because it will do a good enough job, say, if you are having company and need that extra help while you clean other things. However, it only runs a little over an hour before having to charge for over an hour, and then back to cleaning for another hour or more. So if you have a large house, prepare it to be quite a long time that it's running and charging, running and charging. You can run the robot without using the app, but if it has problems you seem to have to look at the app. I don't like having to use app's for everything. Seems everything needs an app now. But on the app it shows you where it's been. And also you need to let it clean a few times before it learns your whole house. Sometimes it will skip a room, or do a partial of a room, but the next time it will do the whole thing. But hey, you can set it to run and go sit down and read a book, or whatever else you want to do. It's also quiet enough that it doesn't scare the cat, she's just curious about it and follows it around.

a dream minus cool sounds

this is a robot like something from the Jetsons or that slave machine from Rocky 2, but it’s a disk shape like a discus but with some girth. Good girth too. Good grip to be had, which is important when you occasionally need to scoop it up because it gets confused by a corner. But it’s more often a cute confusion than a bad one. Its weight is oddly distributed. Don’t let that fool you; no limp handling here. Treat it like a pet (see below). It’s loud but fork it, put on some music (see below). Easy to empty if you are poor and can’t afford the self emptier thing. It’s a marvel I haven’t taken to this till just now. Years. Years have gone by without this thing by my side. Has a hole been filled? TBD. It took a chat over a drop in Call of Duty with my friend to convince me that this was something I needed. “It’s like a pet” he said. That stuck with me. A pet that’s not a pet but a robot. We won that match. I ordered the robot while in the lobby waiting for the next game, which we also won because we rock. It came two days later and I promptly named it pen pen for all the real heads. I love this bitch but I give it 4 stars. Why not 5 you might ask? Well let me tell you, the lack of a perfect score can be attributed to the exact same problem I have with my rice cooker : a distinct lack of cute sounds and songs this thing could play for my amusement. This is where the review turns into an inquiry. I’m very interested in any potential backdoor access to install sound files. If pen pen could sing to me while it worked, I would adore that. If, when I congratulate it on a job well done it did a cool light sequence followed by any soft, rounded sound, that would be fantastic. If it could speak, or sing, in Japanese, Korean or Chinese, at any point, that would be a dream. Lmk. plur plur

Rally Worth it

My wife loves the product, easy to setup and save here time for cleaning. Once in a while (like 20% of the times) it gets stuck and you have to reboot it, worth to mention than nothing was blocking it.

Roooomba

I’ve had this roomba for a few months now and it’s been pretty decent so far. It was bigger and louder than I initially expected it to be but I eventually got used to it. It’s picked up a whole bunch of small particles that I didn’t realize were there. I like to THINK that I keep my apartment spotless but my roomba has shown me otherwise lol. It definitely works better paired with the app. I schedule it to do cleanings 3 times a week and it’s been such a time saver.I don’t understand other people’s complaints about the roomba getting tangled into things around the house. The roomba has sensors so it tries to avoid objects and corners but it doesn’t have arms LOL. It’s not like it can pick up cords and vacuum through them. The instructions clearly state that YOU (the human) have to clear the path for the roomba to work effectively. The only complaint I have is that I paid $300 for this, however it went on sale ($70 cheaper) a few weeks later so I was bummed about paying more than I should’ve.

Bought mine used and saved tons on deprecation

Just buy one used. My old one went out and I needed one to replace with. I didn’t want to spent $400+ so I bought the i3 used for $145. Best deal. I only use on tike and it does well with pet hair.

Assess your needs and know the product's quirks

Does a great job keeping my floors cleaned everyday. However, there are some quirks to be aware of.1. This model does not allow you to have the robot avoid areas where it frequently gets stuck. This becomes problematic as I now have to either purchase additional products to prevent the Roomba from going underneath our couch, or baby sit the Roomba every time it cleans.2. This model is very noisy. Unless you schedule short cleans in areas you are not using, expect to be frustrated by the noise level.3. The collection bin is small. You will probably need to empty it out after every use or buy the expensive accessory that does it for you.4. The Roomba does not do well with area rugs/bathroom mats that are on hard surfaces. I had to purchase Velcro stickers for all of my rugs or it would get caught on the corners and get stuck constantly.I really like this product. It keeps the floors cleaned and I can avoid the task of actually vacuuming everyday, but it requires a lot more optimization of your home/babysitting than I expected.

Defective firmware makes good hardware useless!!

Our 700 series roomba has served us well for many years. So when the battery stopped charging, I was excited to get a thoroughly modern i3. I'd read reviews of the i3 saying it was susceptible to "kidnapping," but I didn't realize how big of a problem this actually was. We have 2 floors, and I was initially delighted to find the i3 charged on our old dock. Though it charges, unfortunately the App won't recognize the old dock as being "docked" and it will introduce an error if you try to kick it off again. It will putz around in a 1 foot area "thinking" before delivering an error message. SAME thing when it encounters something that jams it and you need to clear the rollers. Logically, I'd assumed if it recognized the clearing of rollers as a "kidnapping", it might just start the whole job over again. Not optimal but not terrible either. Instead, it will carry a perpetual error message until you return it to the base. Once on the base, it inconsistently will sometimes reset itself, and other times carry the error message thru, despite the app saying it is "ready". A simple reset to clear the error is all that would be needed, but I've read the entire help guide and FAQs in the app/on the website and found nothing. I dialed the iRobot help line and waited over half an hour, didn't get thru to anyone and hung up in frustration. There's nothing mechanically wrong with this roomba, it just has firmware that sucks.Update: After a lengthy troubleshooting session iRobot diagnosed a defective unit, and advised me to return the unit. I returned the unit to Amazon, ordered another and it works. A couple thoughts: 1. It took the iRoomba customer service a substantial amount of time to actually diagnose that there was an issue (error logging and health checking could be better - and would have saved much frustration!!). 2. Return was quick and easy. Using the unit I have a couple comments: Floor mapping in general does a much better job than my older 700 series roomba. I'm not sure it it's actually any better at cleaning. The rubber rotors are much easier to clean and get less clogged, but I'm not sure if they pick up as much as the brushes on the 700 series. I'm also less pleased that the dirt bin is much smaller - I used to not have to empty every time, now I definitely have to - also the side loading method is much more awkward than the 700's old bin. My biggest complaint is that the i3 leaves a large dump of dirt near the dock, when it turns the suction off prior to docking. Old roomba didn't do this, not sure why this is considered acceptable on a supposedly newer, improved product.
