As a Harry Potter fan I love the idea of this kit! However be warned that the app has a lot of issues, especially if you have an older tablet.

Asked my Mother to buy this expensive piece of trash for my daughter for Christmas. Was really looking forward to it as she is huge into Harry Potter and I'm a bit of a geek and code for a living. Was hoping to teach her some basic logic/reason. Unfortunately the wand is a POS...It constantly disconnects, the software itself is in a "beta", and it comes with no bluetooth receiver. It's too bad because there is quite a bit of potential here :/ I tried to use it on a Windows 10 desktop. Everytime I would try it would disconnect and each time I restarted the software it would force the wand to update a new firmware version. I would exit the application because it was not working, even though it said the wand was indeed connected, and it would tell me the same firmware update was needed again. Tons of other good options out there to teach your children coding without buggy gimmicks. Spend your hard earned money elsewhere and ignore all of these other fake sounding reviews that are way over the top....

We have two Kano computers in the house that our kids built. They barely use them and when they do, it’s to watch YouTube. Just doesn’t teach them to code like you’d expect. YOU need to learn to code, then sit with them one on one. So I thought buying these wands would be the hook to get them in. Turns out only TEN out of SEVENTY spells or exercises with with the Kano/wand interface. You really need a new tablet or new laptop with the right specs. Don’t buy this to use with the Kano computer!!!

I got this for my daughter's birthday to use with her PC after seeing that it works on PC only to find it requires Windows 10, there's no way around this as they have chosen to distribute the software via Microsoft store. After endless hours and paying for a Windows 10 license that I wasn't planning to upgrade to, I was shocked to find that not only it requires win 10, but it should be the x64 version of win 10! Am not sure who is the smart dev lead who decided to exclude a good percentage of PC users who are on win 7, 8 and 10 32bit! Who told you that ppl would buy their kids the latest hardware/software? This is for young kids who usually inherit an older machine or get a basic Atom CPU device I have been trying to install Win 10 x64 to my daughter's PC for weeks now with no use, its bios doesn't support it although the CPU does. Am very frustrated and my kid is so upset, it's been now more than a month since they received this. First and last time I would buy anything from this manufacturer. They should have pointed this limitation very clearly with a BIG RED DISCLAIMER!

Does not stay connected to Bluetooth for more than 1-2 minutes. By the time my daughter finishes the coding for the challenges, the wand has dropped connection, has to be reconnected, and the challenge she was trying has to be found again on the map (because, even though she hasn’t gotten to test out her code with the wand, the app says she has completed that challenge). She is frustrated, I am frustrated, and I cannot believe I spent almost $100 on something with so many issues. I would absolutely return this if I could. (I am a Computer Science teacher so I do know how to use technology)

As a programmer and huge Harry Potter nerd thanks to my 7 year old daughter, I really really wanted this wand to work. We stuck with this for about a week before returning it, and here's a few notes on our experience: -The wand itself just isn't well made. It's molded cheap plastic with a compartment to hold the batteries and processor, and that compartment is really difficult to open and close. I really hope to see an upgraded, better constructed wand that justifies the pricetag. -The difficulty getting into the compartment is important because, as others have noted, there's no on-off switch (!) so your only option for 'off' is to remove the battery. -Once it was set up, my daughter had to pretty much continuously recalibrate the wand in order for it not to lose tracking. The spells you cast are very sensitive to the wand's position and movement, so these calibration issues pretty much torpedoed the experience of recreating spells from the Harry Potter series. -The app itself is extremely rough around the edges. Little things like lack of smooth scrolling, really awkward screen layouts, and texts and video overlays that are way way too small to be legible make the app feel clunky and very beta. -There's some potentially cool custom programs for the wand created and shared by other users, but there's no easy way to sort through the contents that are available, so you spend forever scrolling through content. -The graphics in the app are about as basic as you can find on the App store or Play store, which make the app even less likely to hold your child's attention. We weren't necessarily looking for 4k suitable renderings, but these graphics look like they were done in MS Paint. It's an awesome concept, but just isn't there yet in execution. I hope Kano sticks with it as all of these issues are potentially addressable if their team sticks with it. However for now I'd advise other parents to hold off a bit until the programmers and design team at Kano make some much needed improvements to the wand and the app.
