Good vacuum, just a few issues

The first thing to remember is this not a $600 vacuum and will not have same power as one. This vacuum does a decent job at picking up dust, crumbs, dirt, etc. off of hardwood floors. It also does a decent job on rugs. The charger is very handy, having to only place it in the cradle. One area of improvement is the ON switch. Its nice that it can be operated by one's foot, but the first mode of operation when turned on is for vacuuming carpets/rugs (i.e. fast turning brushes mode). So when the vacuum is first turned on, the brush is turning very fast. Its a little tricky, but I lift the vacuum slightly in the air and try to press the button twice with my foot before letting it touch the floor. It seems a majority of people who buy this vacuum is mainly for their hardwood floors, first, and for their rugs, second. It would make more sense to have the first touch of the button be slow brush mode, then the second touch be fast brush mode for rugs.Another issue I have is the joint between the vacuum head and the vacuum body. This might just be a defect with my vacuum, but it seems very stiff. When I vacuum, I push the vacuum head pushed away from me, then I pull it back towards me, then as I push it away, the vacuum head stays stuck at the 75-90 degree angle it was in and basically looks like its popping a wheelie across the floor as I push it away. I need to vacuum with the vacuum head far enough away to keep it at a low angle or keep putting my foot on it to bring the head down back to the floor. Maybe in time the joint will loosen and I can vacuum like normal. Until then, its a little bit of a pain to use.The battery seems to last a good amount of time. Pretty much what other reviewers have commented. It would be nice if it had a meter to tell you how much battery is left. I tend to vacuum a few spots and leave the vacuum where it is. Then I vacuum some other spots the next day, and so on. So I don't always bother going back to the kitchen and charging it. There have been a few times, I've been vacuuming and the battery dies without warning. Then I need to wait 4-6 hours before I can vacuum again. By then I don't need it because I just bring out the hose on my regular vacuum cleaner and finish the job.I like that its lightweight and cordless, with a good battery and charger. The above mention problems aren't terrible, but definite room for improvement.

A Good Product, Needs Time to Break In

** May 2017 UPDATE**: A little over 1.5 years after buying this, the base has broken off the handle piece. Meaning if we lift it up, the two pieces come apart. While vacuuming, any pressure away from the vacuum will sometimes cut power to it because the power is disconnecting. Obviously this is very disappointing that the product couldn't even last two years, so I'm docking a star from my review.*** June 2017 UPDATE ***: I have revised my rating back up to 4/5 stars because of the very impressive customer service I received from Shark. I thought it only had a one year warranty, so when I contacted their customer service to get a repair quote (for my VISA warranty extension claim), they informed me there was a two year warranty. I explained the issue, and they said they'd send me out a new bottom portion (the battery + head). I said I wasn't sure if that would fix the issue, because the problem was where the top and bottom half connected, but it was a good start. What showed up a week later was a completely new Shark vacuum! This went above and beyond my expectations, so I am very happy with the level of customer service and warranty. I also noticed that the it's much stiffer than our 18 month old unit is - so that tells me that my #1 complaint below is only temporary; it will loosen over time and become easier to control. It still feels a bit cheap though and could use a battery power indicator. :-)---I purchased this on the strength of the reviews here, and sadly, I'd say the people giving it 5 stars haven't used a better product and thus don't know what they're missing. This is a "meh" product for the following reasons:1) It's an ergonomic disaster. It doesn't move easily or naturally. It's awkward. The bottom piece doesn't always stay down once you've put it down. It's hard to turn corners with.2) It's extremely cheap feeling. I know it's only $90, but come on, it has the build quality of a $40 product. Very poor build quality; creaky and cheap plastic-feeling. I'm dubious how long it will last.3) There's no battery power indicator, so you don't know when you're about to run out of batteries. The pros? It sucks. Literally. Very powerful suction, especially when it's in carpet mode. It has no issues picking up all manner of stuff off our rugs, which I appreciate. But that doesn't make up for how awkward it is to use. Shark needs to steal some engineers from Hoover or another big brand to help them make products that move better.

Good for the price but hose requires frequent maintenance

My house is mostly hardwood and this vacuum has helped me keep the floors much cleaner. I no longer have to do the shuffle of cleaning 30 square feet and then plug and replug in a new outlet constantly. However, after having this for 4 weeks and experiencing significant suction loss over the last 2 weeks, I realized the hose was already completely clogged. I’m going to have to clean out the hose, which isn’t easy, every 2 weeks. What a pain.

Update - change of rating DO NOT BUY

Below is my original review and you’ll see that I was very hard on this product. I take it all back well at least most of it. This thing plugs up in the house and it’s chamber tube is a small diameter - poor engineering. Once you clean the house chamber is sucks like new. It still is not a deep clean. This piece of crap doesn’t even pick up a fly off my carpet no kidding it would not pick up a dead fly. You have to go over and over and over it again it’s a horrible waste of money. The suction power is nonexistent I can promise you it’s not pulling any sand out of your rugs what a hunk of junk for the money do not buy

The battery does not last as long as I would like until I have to recharge.

Good for the price

This is a good cordless for the money. I like that it sits in its charger, is always ready to go and doesn't require fiddling with it to get it in/out of the charger. The battery lasts about 7-10 mins on high and is adequate for my purposes. The suction and battery life don't compare to my cordless Bissell, but I use it in my cat room for cleaning up litter and hair, and have no complaints with that. It has two speeds, but I use the high/carpet mode all the time. It won't suck up your rugs (like my Bissell, which is good and bad at the same time), but picks up well. It can flatten for getting under the bed, etc., but its turning is only fair. Also, I didn't realize how important a light at the front was until I didn't have it (this one does not). Overall, for the price, it's a good buy.

Not what I was hoping for

I like this vacuum for my carpet when it needs a quick vacuum. I like that it has tHe option to turn off the roller brush. I had high hopes it would work well in my kitchen. It isn’t as great as I hoped. The suction isn’t as powerful to pick up everything on my kitchen floor. It works much better on my carpet.I do love the charging port it sits on and how easy it is to dump the crumbs.

Picks up Great

The only things we do not like about the new Stick Vacuum is it does not have a light on it like our old one. We have never tried to use the stick vacuum for stairs, it is too awkward.
