Works pretty good, iffy on motion detection consistency and clarity at night

It works pretty good but it's iffy on when it picks up motion at the same distance every time. The "detection zones" aren't accurate. I have a neighbor who's driveway is somewhat close and I adjusted the zone 10ft from the edge of their driveway and and it goes off every time they go up or down their driveway. It's not clear enough at night to get a crisp view of a face at 15+ft to truly ID who it is. As far as if this one is worth the extra money, I don't think so. I haven't used any of the lower end models but, it's good enough for when someone is coming to the door. Another issue is being notified as soon as someone is at the door, there's sometimes a 10-30 second delay. it's pretty quick when they actually ring the bell. The volume of notifications isn't consistent either. Sometimes it's a mild notification and sometimes super loud regardless of the settings. I even uninstalled/reinstalled the app, etc etc and it's still the same. Install was super easy even to connect to the existing doorbell wiring. That keeps me from having to deal with the battery dying. I've seen others who have issues with theirs dying and such. Is it worth the money, that's for the person who's buying it to decide. If I was buying again, I'd get it again.

Reliable (don’t expect to be wowed)

Overall it’s a great product and what you expect from Ring/Amazon. The picture quality is good and and the motion detection has been very impressive compared to the Ring 1 that I just upgraded from. The Cons: 1.) integration with Alexa- the live video display on your show devices takes long...like you might as well just open the door and find out who it is before waiting forever for the video to show if it does at all. 2.) Upgrading from a previous Ring- if you’re upgrading from a Ring 1 like I did, be aware that the design of this mounting bracket is going to give you a headache. You would think the drilling holes to mount the bracket would remain in the same place as the old version since the device is the same size...wrong. You will have to caulk and re-drill new holes for this bracket. Pros: Faceplate- the two faceplates that ship with the device (basic silver and oil rubbed bronze) are a nice option to match the outdoor aesthetic Apartment living- I live in an apartment with no existing door bell. If you have a ring and your home has Alexa devices they will act as a doorbell chime when the button is pressed. This is very nice and eliminates the need for a Ring Chime. In addition, through IFTTT and Phillips Hue you can actually select to have certain (or all) lights in your home blink in addition to the chime. I LOVE this feature for on my outdoor patio to see the lights blink and know someone is at my door. All in all it’s a great product. If you’re looking to upgrade from a previous Ring I’d suggest wait for a better release because this won’t blow your socks off. But if you can get it for a good deal, (I.e. trade in special) it might be worth considering.

Wasn't expecting the added cost

I love the camera. Within the first week it recorded my ex throwing a fit and needing the police called. The video was used as evidence rather than he said/she said. It works with alexa but I wish the connectivity was faster. When someone rings it takes about 20 seconds to load. Yes 20 seconds is not that much time in the grand scheme of things but I could've answered the door in that time. The app doesn't have a feature to alert me only when someone is at my door (even without pushing the button). We have a walkway right in front of the door (I mean right in front). In order to be told when someone is at the door I either have to be told every single time someone walks by or not at all (unless they ring the bell). It's too much! There's also the added cost of the membership in order to keep the videos. Not a big fan!

Update on Initial Review

My Ring doorbell lost connection to the wifi, and after playing around with it for over an hour I decided to remove the doorbell from my account. BIG mistake. Apparently, after spending 45 minutes with customer service, if you don't have the QR Code or 5 digit pin you cannot re-setup the device! The doorbell is cemented to my wall and I threw out the box long ago. Ring Frontliner customer service was absolutely no help and I now have a $170 conversation piece permanently attached to my front entry wall. *** UPDATE *** I was contacted by a Ring Community Support Specialist who talked through all the possibilities of getting the device working. She sent me a Ring Chime to help fix the problem. After working with her I was able to get my Ring Device working again, and have had no problems since!

Can't use in extreme cold

This won't affect most people, but I bought it for my parents who live in a place that gets down to -35 Celsius in the dead of winter, and we learned that the ring won't work at those temps. They just removed it during the coldest nights, but that's not super convenient and I wished I'd known before. Otherwise, works great. Motion detection was a bit tricky to set properly, but seems to work fine now.

It works like it’s intended

A few minor scratches. The only thing i didn’t like was that it was already under someone’s account. Had to request to have the account removed. Waited 16 days before I could use it under my account.

Old body, New features

So this product was a bit of a confusing thing to me due to looking exactly like the RVD2 and yet they still have that model vs replacing it with this. Now a bit of context here, I use to work for Ring for over three years during pretty critical product launches and then quit a year after Amazon acquired them (Amazon ruined most of the Ring spark that made it good working there). So overall I'll lay out the good and bad for you Pros- 1080p video that looks better then both the peephole and RVD2 - snapshot (captures an image every hour or 14 minutes depending on your selection) - overall a better motion sensor then RVD classic and RVD2, which means less false motion at least in my case - I think there's been some improvements internally to increase battery life as this now lasts then my previous RVD2 - Adjustable motion zones - 2.4ghz and 5ghz Wi-Fi support - Privacy zones Cons- Outdated and boring looking design - Pre-roll feature will show on the RVD3 but does not work, it's restricted to the $30 more expensive Video Doorbell 3 + which I think is a poor decision as that device shouldn't exist and is clearly Amazon trying to milk more money from consumers for a small feature - Ring Protect Plan is still too expensive in my option and should offer a plan that is half priced for say storing the videos for 30 days instead of the 60 that it normally does (you can remotely save videos on your PC/Mac if you login in online if you needed to save an important one. Also Ring will say "They can't recover or access your videos if you didn't have the protect plan" but that's totally false, they can and will but normally act like it's impossible. I've seen it done from an angry customer requesting them and they will also "find" them if you get a police subpoena for a crime ) So in all this really isn't worth the extra cost if you can get the RVD2 at $100-$150, and the RVD3+ is utterly pointless unless you REALLY want that extra 4 seconds of video before a motion although it's not going to work all the time and looks bad in night vision. 5.5/10
