Long delay in finalizing a form delayed my filing

In accordance with best practice of completing and filing returns as soon as possible to avoid potential fraudulent activity I planned to file in early February 2024. The federal form that calculates potential underpayment penalties was not ready in the software. I was informed 3-4 times of the expected ready date which was repeatedly missed. This delayed my filing by at least one month. Also for tax year 2022 I discovered a miscalculation in the software that also delayed my filing many weeks. My confidence level in your product has reduced significantly.

Terrible

So disappointed in this product. Very seriously doubt I will use next year. For two years in a row I've been unable to complete my tax return, yes it is a bit complex but nothing this software hasn't been able to handle in past years. This year return was completely finished, EXCEPT software was not "able" to be electronically sent, same thing for last year. Used FREE tax software on IRS website, and State was much cheaper to send, and no sales tax added!

Room for improvement

Two main issues I have 1) You cannot electronically submit after October 15th (6 month extension), your software gives some error, like processing for next year and implies its someone else's fault, when its completely yours. Effectively this makes electronic filing impossible, since I'm still waiting for the IRS to process my last 2 previous years returns filed over 7 months ago. This drama of the IRS taking over a year to process returns has been going on since 2020 when they started storing their unopened mail in semi trailers at the post office closest to the IRS office.. 2. Your import of stock trades is rubbish, period, it completely jacks up the transactions, leading to me having to manually enter the info, so tedious. Also you cant import for the very same reason as #1 from the institutions. Again you place these arbitrary date restrictions on your software.

a bug not fixed for more than a decade

In the capital gain worksheet, they only allow 6-7 digits number for your purchase or sale, if you have a larger number, the software will report an error. Very simple to fix and a stupid bug, but it took more than a decades, and still there in version 2023, let's hope it will be fixed in 2024 version.

State return was difficult

When I did our Federal income taxes, we filed jointly as a married couple. However, my wife is living in TN, taking care of her elderly mother for all of 2023. When I tried to file our AL state income taxes (I am still living in Alabama with the good job and good insurance), your software said we had to file separately. So I filed for myself (AL state), and did not file state income taxes for my wife, because the 2 months she worked in 2023 were in the state of TN which has no income tax. I think if we had been allowed to file jointly for AL state income taxes, with one of us living in AL, the other in TN, we would have gotten a refund. However, your software would not allow it.
