I bought these for their Matter integration, but I guess I'll have to wait for everyone to get their acts together before using them that way. Based on the suggestions in these comments, I first updated the firmware through the Tapo app, then factory reset them, and then tried to set them up with Matter for use with Google Home. The installation appeared to go smoothly using the QR codes, but once set up they always shows up as "offline" in Google Home. I've tried all the tricks suggested in these comments, but frankly shouldn't have to spend hours and hours troubleshooting - setting up a smart outlet for use on Google Home shouldn't be this hard or frustrating.I ended up resetting them again and adding them conventionally by linking my Tapo account and adding them that way. They work fine, but you pay extra for the Matter integration. I'll try again in a few months - maybe they'll end up being worth the extra $$ for Matter, but so far not so much.

This is my first matter device and I cannot get it to add to Apple HomeKit. I've played with it for a bit but nothing seems to work. I was able to add via Homebridge but the whole point behind Matter is to not to have to use Homebridge for all these devices. Anyway, the intended application is not that critical so I'm going to leave it for now and hope that at some point I'll be able to add it natively. I assume there are software issues that need to be worked out that will fix it. Hopefully.Update: After a lot of playing I finally got it to add to HomeKit. I’ll list what ultimately worked for me but I can’t say if all or any of this is what made it finally work. So I took it out of my basement where there’s a bunch of devices that could interfere with it and brought upstairs and also closer to my main access point. I removed it from the Tapo app to restore it back to initial setup mode. Then I added it to HomeKit first. I know setup says otherwise but I was just trying stuff. Anyway, it finally did add but showing it as not connected. Then I set it up in the Tapo app. After that HomeKit connected and it worked as intended. I then unplugged it and brought it back down to the basement where I was using it. Way too much trouble to finally get it to work. Hopefully, things evolve bc these are a nice option for HomeKit.Update 2: Bought 5 more to replace all the non-HomeKit ones around the house. Setup was smooth.
